Canone Inverso and model
Hot of the bench! This is an idea that I had about three years ago, but because of serial broken wrists I was not able to act on it. I am happy to report that it is comfortably ensconced in a living room in Mid-coast Maine and looks quite fetching.
The idea I was perusing here was an investigation into opposites. Opposing curves, positive and negative space, and light and dark. I had a couple of interesting boards of spalted maple and a couple of beautiful boards of Peruvian walnut. Spalted maple has these random streaks of dark brown/black running through the wood. I thought it would be visually interesting to "spalt" the walnut using epoxy tinted white and textured with grout. For the record the grout was a super bad idea as it because as hard as rock and virtually impossible to work. Next time it's diatomaceous earth: all the texture none of the unwieldy nature!
The top of the table is a soft rectangle with corresponding aprons that follow the curve. The shelf has a concave curve with aprons which likewise follow that curve. The legs are soft squares which taper asymmetrically to the floor. The taper is more aggressive on inside faces of the legs and less so on the outside faces. Both the top and the shelf are supported by stretchers held between the aprons which create the illusion of floating surfaces.
